Title: Telecommunications Assistant
Description: Assists the Telecommunications Manager with the administration of telephony services. Performs complex technical programming through connection to the switch equipment for campus telephony services. Work involves responsibility to maintain voicemail and menu system, call accounting and 911 databases and to process billings. Supervises and trains switchboard operators.
Examples: Programs and resolves issues with telephone equipment using desktop computer, MS Office and other software. Works with university community to resolve and troubleshoot issues and discuss and plan new and changing campus communication environments. Maintains voicemail and menu systems; maintains telephone records and 911 locations; processes reports and call records for long distance billing. Handles repair orders and shipping/receiving of phone equipment. Reconciles telephony equipment purchases; audits and initiates payment of telephone bills. Coordinates service and change orders with phone service companies. Hires, supervises, schedules, and trains telephone operators. Works with university police to resolve harassing and inappropriate call issues.
Physical Condition: Ability to lift 25 lbs. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Must be able to work at a keyboard and view a monitor for long periods of time.
Experience: Minimum two years experience programming moves/adds/changes with telephone lines in an institutional setting. Experience with Nortel Meridian 1 switch equipment, preferred. Responsible general office and supervisory experience, desirable.
Knowledge: Requires knowledge and skill in programming and error resolution of analog and digital telephone lines, preferably in a Meridian 1 Switch and maintenance of voicemail and menu services. Skill in the use of general office equipment and telephones, consoles, and computer software: Word, Excel, AnchorPoint Call Accounting, and ProComm Plus.
Education: Graduation from a standard high school; some college preferred.
Additional Requirements: Must be able to work independently and be well organized. Must demonstrate initiative and be able to solve complex problems. Requires excellent communication and organizational skills. Must be able to establish and maintain effective professional working relations with university staff, faculty, and students. *This position is designated as security sensitive and requires a criminal background check.
